OceanaGold controls and operates mines in the three largest goldfields in New Zealand. On the South Island, the Macraes operation in Otago consisting of an open pit and underground mine as well as the Reefton operation on the west coast consisting of an open pit mine. Reefton transitioned into care and maintenance at the end of 2015. On the North Island, OceanaGold acquired the Waihi gold operation from Newmont Mining in October 2015. This operation consists of an underground mine but also includes an open pit mine where mining activities are currently suspended.
